India has finalized to ink a $4 billion order with Boeing to buy 10 Boeing built C-17 Globemaster Heavy-lift aircraft, with an option for an additional 6 more.
These aircrafts would significantly augment India's strategic airlift capabilities. C-17 can carry a payload of 75 tonnes to over 4000 km distance and takeoff from a 2km long airstrip.
This deal would make India, the biggest operator of C-17 after USAF. Currently IAF operates a dozen Russian origin IL-76 for heavy lift and 104 An-32 as medium lift aircraft.
