Polish Ministry of National Defence cancelled contract for medium range Aerostar UAV signed in 2010 with Israeli company Aeronautics Defense System. The company did not meet the deadline for the second time in spite of postponing it for two years.
Aeronautics was to start the service of ground surveillance in Afghanistan from September 11 but did not meet the terms of the contract.
Signed in 2010 and covering two systems, the $35million purchase was made in order to deploy the UAS in Afghanistan, where Polish army units are part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
Warsaw's deal included the development of an automatic take-off and landing (ATOL) capability, with this to have enabled the unmanned aircraft to approach and land safely in windy conditions and other ground effects encountered in the operational area.
Aeronautics encountered problems with the ATOL capability, which led to it failing to meet the delivery schedule agreed in the contract.
At the moment in Afghanistan the US soldiers are providing Polish soldiers with images from UAVs.
Ministry said it would demand money back and will ask for compensation.
