IOMAX unveiled its new Archangel armed surveillance aircraft during the 2013 Paris Airshow. Archangel is based on the Thrush 710P two-seated agricultural aircraft used for crop dusting, manufactured by Thrush Aircraft of Albany, Georgia.
The aircraft is designed to perform border patrol, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.
The IOMAX Archangel is equipped with advanced avionics and weapons systems, including an electro-optical / infrared (EO/IR) sensor.
Archangel is designed to carry laser-guided bombs and laser-guided rockets. It is being displayed with a range of weapons, including the Hellfire missile and Roketsan Cirit laser-guided rocket.
Archangel has a takeoff weight of 14,500 lb (6577 kg), and can carry external stores weighing upto 5,340 lb (2422 kg) in 6 wing and 1 centerline hardpoints.
The aircraft has a wing span of 54ft (16.5m) and length of 36ft (11m). The two pilots has an tandem seating arrangement.
Iomax modifies the aircraft with a two-seat cockpit, six-weapon hardpoints and an L-3 Wescam MX-15Di imaging and targeting turret on a centerline pylon. The MX-15Di incorporates infrared, color and mono daylight cameras and a laser designator. It also has an armoured cabin.
The CMC supplied avionics suite is fitted in both the front and rear cockpits of the Archangel. The front cockpit consists of three 5x7 inch Multi-Function Displays (MFD) and one Up Front Control Panel (UFCP). The rear cockpit comprises one 5x7 inch MFD and one UFCP. The heart of CMC’s Cockpit 4000 integrated avionics suite is the Mission Computer. The MFDs and the UFCP are driven directly by the Mission Computer, providing control and display functions for the high-resolution graphics associated with the navigation and mission data.
The avionics suite features a mature and proven operational flight program that integrates the aircraft dynamic sensors, navigation radios, communication radios, EO/IR sensor and weapon system to provide a wide range of navigation and mission requirements. CMC’s standardized avionics solution minimizes the integration effort required for aircraft installation.
Archangel features an armoured cockpit and has a 10+ hour endurance on ISR missions, but lacks cabin pressurization and ejection seats.
The aircraft is powered by a 1700 SHP Pratt & Whitney PT6A-67F turboshaft engine.
