European turboprop manufacturer ATR won 48 new aircraft orders for its ATR 72 turboprop airliner, including 28 firm orders during the Singapore Airshow worth nearly $1.2 billion.

ATR announced two of these three new orders, which consists a contract for the purchase of 40 ATR 72-600s, which includes firm orders for 20 aircraft and options for 20 additional ones by the UAE based leasing company Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, and a contract with the Spain’s Canary Islands carrier Binter Canarias for the sale of six firm ATR 72-600 aircraft, valued at almost US$ 150 million. Binter Canarias introduced their first ATRs in 1989, and currently operates a fleet of 18 ATR aircraft.

On the occasion of the airshow, the signing with the operator Bangkok Airways formalized the identity of the purchaser of eight ATR 72-600 aircraft (including 6 firm orders) which had been undisclosed at the presentation of annual results for 2013.

This is a strong start for ATR in 2014, which confirms the success seen in 2013, a year which ended with a total of195 aircraft sold (89 firm orders and 106 options). ATR 72-600 can seat 68 to 74 passengers and is powered by twin Pratt & Whitney 127M turboprop engine with 2,750 horsepower per engine. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 23,000 kgs and can carry a maximum load of 7,500 kgs to 900 nautical miles (1,665 km).
