The A330 Multi Role Tanker-Transport (MRTT) is derived from the Airbus A330 wide-body commercial airliner and can double as an troop transporter and aerial refuelling aircraft.
The deal makes Qatar, the seventh nation to select the A330 MRTT, after Australia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom which have ordered a total of 34 aircraft, and India which is in the final stages of contractual negotiations for six aircraft.
Qatar will be the third country to operate the type after Saudi Arabia and UAE in the Middle East. A total of 17 aircrafts are currently in service.
In tanker mode, it can carry 111 tonnes of fuel, supporting intercontinental deployment of aircrafts. In transport mode it can ferry up to 300 troops, or a payload of up to 45 tonnes.
