British Lynx Helicopter

A British helicopter crashed during a routine flight in Kandahar Province, southern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing all the five onboard military personnels.

Brtish MoD confirmed helicopter crash and said the incident is under investigation.

The fatal crash involved a Agusta Westland Lynx Mk 9 multi-purpose twin-engined battlefield helicopter.
Three of the servicemen were from the Army Air Corps, based at RAF Odiham in Hampshire. One was a Royal Air Force serviceman also based at RAF Odiham. One was a member of the Army Reserve from 3 Military Intelligence Battalion, based in London.

The Lynx AH9A is deployed mainly for convoy overwatch, reconnaissance, surveillance, support helicopter escort and troop transport.

It is the first fatal accident involving a UK military helicopter in Afghanistan since the conflict began in 2001.

Earlier in September 2006, a RAF Nimrod MR2 aircraft crashed in Afghanistan killing fourteen British personnels during a reconnaisance flight.
