The research and development department (MAFAT) of Israel's Defense Ministry and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI ) launched the Ofek 10 spy satellite on Wednesday, at 22:15 hours, abroad its Shavit satellite launcher from an Israeli Air Force test range, probably from Palmachim Airbase.

Ofek 10 is an observation remote-sensing satellite that employs synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to take high-resolution imagery for military use. It is capable of taking images during day and night and in all weather conditions.

The 400kg satellite will boost Israel's capability to monitor Iran's suspected nuclear weapon development and military programs and that of all its adversaries in the region.

Israel launched its first Ofek series satellites in 1988. The Ofek 10 and Shavit multi stage satellite launcher were developed and produced by Israel's Ministry of Defense, with IAI as primary contractor.
Israel launches its satellites into a highly retrograde orbit over the Mediterranean Sea to prevent debris coming down in populated areas and also to avoid flying over hostile nations in the east.
