South Korea has requested a Foreign Military Sale(FMS) with US for AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder air to air missiles and associated equipment, parts, training and logistical support for an estimated cost of $98 million.

The deal consists a possible sale of 76 AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder Block II All-Up-Round Missiles, 24 CATM-9X-2 Captive Air Training Missiles, 8 CATM-9X-2 Block II Missile Guidance Units, and 4 AIM-9X-2 Block II Tactical Guidance Units, containers, missile support and test equipment, provisioning, spare and repair parts, personnel training.

Raytheon built AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II is the most advanced infrared-tracking, short-range air-to-air missile in the world. The AIM-9X Block II adds a redesigned fuze and a digital Ignition Safety Device that enhances ground handling and in-flight safety.

The Block II variant also features updated electronics that enable significant enhancements, including lock-on-after-launch capability using a new weapon datalink to support Beyond Visual Range engagements.
The 188 pound missile is powered by a Solid-propellant rocket.
The missiles will equip South Koarean Air Force F-15K and F-16 fighters supplementing existing missile capabiliilty and enhance interoperability with U.S. forces.
