BAE systems and UK Ministry of Defence has agreed a 5 year, £125 million ($211 million) extension to the support contract for the RAF’s Tornado GR4 fighter bomber fleet.

The revised contract will result in savings of up to £90 million compared to the original agreement.

The ATTAC (Availability Transformation: Tornado Aircraft Contract) support contract was signed in 2006 and was due to expire in 2016.

The contract will support the fleet until its retirement in 2019, and will be replaced by Eurofighter Typhoon and F-35 Lightning II jets.

The maintenance work will be carried out at RAF Marham in Norfolk, RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, RAF Leeming in Yorkshire and at BAE Systems sites in Warton and Samlesbury.

The contract will sustain 600 jobs across the UK for BAE Systems.

Currently the Tornado GR4 is deployed in Afghanistan, providing vital air support to UK and wider International Security Assistance Force operations, and has previously supported operations in Iraq, Kosovo and Libya.

Earlier, BAE systems was awarded a £100m contract in January 2014 to continue support the RAF’s Typhoon fleet throughout 2014.
