New Zealand Ministry of Defence has selected MBDA Sea Ceptor Local Area Air Defence System to equip Royal New Zealand Navy’s ANZAC frigate as a part of Frigate Systems Upgrade (FSU) program.

The missiles will replace the obsolete semi-active guidance RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missiles in the frigates Mk.41 Vertical Launch Systems.

As an active radar system, Sea Ceptor does not require the dedicated tracker/illuminator radars on which semi-active systems depend.

Sea Ceptor deploys the CAMM (Common Anti-air Modular Missile) which, due to its soft launch technology, requires no efflux management system.

The CAMM missile travelling at 1 km per second will be capable to engage jets or cruise missiles travelling at supersonic speeds.
Sea Ceptor can protect an area of around 500 square miles (1,300 square kilometres) over sea.

MBDA UK is developing the Sea Ceptor, for installation onto the British Royal Navy’s (RN) Type 23 Frigates.
New Zealand is the first export customer for the system.
