Airbus has extended the On-Board Airport Navigation System (OANS), first developed for the A380 to its single-aisle A320 and widebody A330 airliner families.
The OANS system, co-developed with Thales, presents pilots with an overview map display of the airport apron and taxiways, and can be controlled through a cursor control device.
The OANS dynamically presents the aircraft position over a high-resolution geo-referenced airport moving maps, using an Airport Mapping Database (AMDB).
As a result, the OANS helps reduce errors in surface navigation, prevent runway incursions by warning the pilots in advance, and reduce pilot workload in complex airfields.
OANS was first type-certified on the A380 in 2006 and in 2013 the system was adapted and certified as an option for both the A320 and A330 families.
The advanced cockpit technology developed to navigate the giant A380 on ground, will also be applied to Airbus's under flight test next-generation A350 XWB jetliner.
