Bombardier resumed engine-ground run trials on its CSeries CS100 flight test vehicles (FTVs) in Mirabel, Québec after an engine fire on FTV1 prototype on May 29 resulted in grounding of flight test fleet.
The engine fire was later traced to Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) in the PW1500G engine.

Bombardier has shipped the PW 1500G Geared Turbofan (GTF) engine involved to Pratt and Whitney in Connecticut for tear-down and analysis.

Bombardier said the flight test program is expected to resume in the coming weeks, and confirmed the CSeries aircraft will not make an appearance at the 2014 Farnborough Air Show.

“Now that we have a good understanding of what happened, a procedure is in place that introduces control measures to avoid such events. We are working to get back on track and today have resumed ground engine runs to return the FTVs to flight test program safely,” said Robert Dewar, Vice President and General Manager, CSeries Program.

“Over the last week, we have also been running stationary tests of other systems such as the APU, electrical systems and avionics with entry into service still expected in second half of 2015".

There are currently four CSeries FTVs in the flight test program, which together have logged a total of about 330 flight test hours.

As for the aircraft damage on FTV1 due to the engine incident, Bombardier said it is manageable and our engineering and maintenance teams have commenced repairs on it.
