Brazil has signed a contract with Airbus Defence and Space for the acquisition of 3 Airbus C295 turboprop aircraft, configured for search and rescue (SAR) missions.

First delivery to the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) will start from the end of this year.

The agreement also includes a 5 year Full In Service Support (FISS) contract.

The 3 SAR aircraft will join the 12 C295 airlifters already operated by FAB, taking the total fleet to 15.

The FAB pilots will be trained in a Full Flight Simulator for the C295 at the Air Base of Manaus-Brasil (BAMN facility).
A fully SAR-configured C295 features chin-mounted EO/IR pod, belly mounted search radar, and four spotter windows.

The four bubble spotter windows offers panoramic coverage during visual search.

The multi-mode search radar provides all weather, day and night detection, localisation, classification, and tracking of targets over water and land. The maximum range is 200 nautical miles.

The Electro Optical /Infrared sensors provide day and night localisation, tracking and identification of targets through thermal or visual detection in adverse weather. It has a range of 20 nm.
It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines.
