The K-MAX unmanned cargo helicopter has completed its nearly three-year deployment in Afghanistan.
K-MAX has conducted thousands of delivery missions for the U.S. Marine Corps, lifting more than 4.5 million pounds of cargo since deployment in Dec 2011.
The remote controlled K-MAX was developed to reduce the number of truck resupply convoys and their troop escorts to protect soldiers on the ground as troop convoys were frequently targeted using improvised explosive devices.
Manufactured by Kaman Aerospace Corporation, the K-MAX UAS is capable to lift a payload of over 6,000 pounds (2,722 kg), which is more than the it's empty weight and can fly delivery missions day and night.
It is powered by Honeywell T53-17 turboshaft rated at 1341 kW. Maximum speed achievable is 185.2 km/h with a range of 494.5 km.
