U.S. President Barak Obama said the Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was shot down using a surface to air missile fired by Russian backed rebels in the region.
The airplane was flying at 33000 ft while it was shot down using a Buk anti aircraft defense system. Flight MH17 would be a sitting duck for the anti aircraft system as the passenger jet would be flying straight and at a relatively slow speed than a fighter plane which the Buk system is designed to engage.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said, State Security Service of Ukraine has intercepted a conversation in which one of the leaders of the mercenaries boasted about bringing down the plane in his reporting to his Russian supervisor, colonel of the General Intelligence Unit of Russia's Armed Forces.
Pro Russian rebels had earlier shot down a no of Ukrainian airplanes including an IL-76, An-26 military transport planes and an Su-25 attack fighter.
The Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala-Lumpur, killing all the 298 members onboard.
