Saab has awarded a multi million contract to Selex ES to supply the Raven ES-05 AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar for Saab’s Gripen Next Generation (NG) fighters.

A production-standard Raven AESA radar is now installed on Gripen demonstration aircraft.

The AESA radar transmitter and receiver functions are composed of numerous small solid-state transmit/receive modules (TRMs).

Each module generates and radiates its own independent signal, hence it can spread their signal across a band of frequencies, making it very difficult to detect over background noise, imparting stealth to the aircraft.
AESA radar also have high jam resistance, low probability of intercept, and improve pilot's situational awareness.

Selex signed the agreement with Saab for the development of the Raven ES AESA radar in 2009.

The Raven ES-05 AESA radar features an innovative roll-repositionable AESA antenna to provide a full ±100º field of regard that improves the capability for maximum situational awareness and platform survivability. This allows the pilot to maintain the missile datalink and turn away to acquire other targets.
The AESA antenna is coupled to fully digital multi-channel exciter/receiver and processor Line Replaceable Units (LRUs). These provide a comprehensive mode suite which includes air-to-air, air-to-surface, interleaved and support functions which can be readily adapted or extended in software to meet future needs.
