South Korea has finalized its formal selection of the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II aircraft for its F-X fighter acquisition program.

South Korea has finalized its formal selection of the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II aircraft for its F-X fighter acquisition program.

Following a comprehensive evaluation process, South Korea, first announced its competitive selection of F-35A in March 2014, beating 4th generation Boeing F-15 Silent Eagle and Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets.

The deal is for 40 F-35A Conventional Take Off and Landing (CTOL) variant jets with initial deliveries beginning in 2018.

South Korea is the third country to procure F-35A through Foreign Military Sales (FMS), joining Israel in 2010 and Japan in 2011.
