Two U.S. Navy F/A-18 Hornets fighter jets operating from aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) crashed on Friday, while operating at sea in the western Pacific Ocean.

The two jets were proceeding to their initial stations when they apparently collided approximately seven miles from the ship, after being launched from the flight deck.

The two aircraft were assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 94 (VFA-94) and Strike Fighter Squadron 113 (VFA-113).

During the incident the USS Carl Vinson was operating in the Western Pacific Ocean approximately 250 nautical miles west of Wake Island.

One of the pilot was quickly rescued and returned to Carl Vinson, and is currently receiving medical attention. Search efforts continue for the second pilot.

Carl Vinson and embarked Carrier Air Wing 17 are currently underway in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of responsibility supporting security and stability in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.

In June another U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet crashed while approaching for landing, also operating from USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier. The Boeing F/A-18 had total four crashes in 2014.
