U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command successfully launched an unarmed Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Sept. 23 at 7:45 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

The test launche was aimed to verify the accuracy and reliability of the ICBM weapon system, to ensure effective nuclear deterrence.
The ICBM's reentry vehicle, which contained a telemetry package used for operational testing, traveled approximately 4,200 miles to the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
The launch team was comprised of Airmen from 576th Flight Test Squadron at Vandenberg AFB and the 91st Missile Wing at Minot AFB, North Dakota.
Minot AFB is one of three missile bases with crew members standing alert 24-7 year round, overseeing the nation's 450 ICBM alert forces.

The Minuteman-III is the only land-based ICBM in service with US. The Boeing built 35 ton missile entered service in 1970s.
