At 2014 NBAA business aviation trade show and exhibition in Orlando, Florida (USA), Sagem unveiled a prototype of its new active side stick unit (SSU) for civil airplanes and helicopters.
Unlike the current passive side-stick technology- standard on Airbus commercial jetliners, which has no tactile feedback, active SSUs allows pilots to feel how the aircraft responds to control inputs.

The side stick controller has a robust design that stands up to all types of contingencies and an optimized architecture supporting the real-time adjustment of force feel laws. Thanks to its stick shaker / Stick pusher function and the fine synchronization between all side stick units, this system greatly facilitates pilot/co-pilot coordination and the management of stressful situations.

Sagem says the SSU has been tested over the last few months in close collaboration with airline pilots and test pilots from major airplane and helicopter manufacturers, confirming its perfect match with flight safety and crew training requirements.

Sagem’s active side stick unit is being showcased at Safran’s NBAA booth, with dynamic demonstrations in a flight simulator featuring a full glass cockpit.
