Airbus Defence and Space and Tata Advanced Systems (TASL) have submitted a joint bid to replace the Indian Air Force´s fleet of vintage Hawker Siddley HS748 Avro transports.

Airbus is offering the Airbus C295 medium transport with TASL as the Indian Production Agency (IPA). A total of 56 Avro aircraft are to be replaced.

In the event of contract award, Airbus will supply the first 16 aircraft in ‘fly-away’ condition from its own final assembly line. The subsequent 40 aircraft will be manufactured and assembled by Tata Advanced Systems in India. This will include undertaking structural assembly, final aircraft assembly, systems integration and testing, and management of the indigenous supply chain.
The C295 is a robust and reliable, highly versatile tactical airlifter which can carry up to carry up to nine tonnes of payload or up to 71 personnel, at a maximum cruise speed of 260 kt or 480 km/h.

Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127G turboprop engines, the C295 provides pressurised cabin, it can cruise at altitudes up to 25,000 ft, while retaining remarkable short take-off & landing (STOL) performance from unprepared short, soft and rough airstrips, as well as low level flight characteristics.

Italian Alenia Aermacchi has backed off from the bid to offer its C-27J Spartan airlifter.
