Indonesia's National Search and Rescue Agency Basarnas has confirmed that the tail section of the crashed AirAsia Flight QZ5801 has been located in the bottom of Java Sea.
The finding is crucial as the Black Box of the Airbus A320 airplane is located in the tail section.
AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes(@tonyfernandes) tweeted "I am led to believe the tail section has been found. If right part of tail section then the black box should be there".
Rescue operations has entered the 11th day, and is currently focusing on underwater search.
The tail was detected using the sidescan sonar and multibeam echosounder. SAR team retrieved a visual confirmation of the tail part of QZ 8501’s aircraft, following underwater documentation of the aircraft’s tail and small wreckage, which showed the plane’s registration number (PK-AXC), captured by the SAR team’s sea divers.
The tail part was found in the additional focus search area (approx. 30 kms from the primary focus area). The SAR operation is still underway as the weather is reported to be clear with good underwater visibility for the divers to continue observation.
