Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) has completed successful maiden flight test of the Naval variant of Korean Utility Helicopter (KUH) Surion on January 19 in Sacheon, South Gyeongsang Province.
The flight test lasted 30 minutes and explored basic manuevers.
The helicopter will be delivered to Korean Marine Corps after completing development trials including cold weather and shipboard operation trials by 2015.
The helicopter features optimised fuselage for shipboard operation, emergency flotation system during sea ditching, auxillary fuel tank for extended range operations, foldable main rotors, Tactical Air Navigation (TACN) and high frequency radios.
The amphibous Surion has some 40 orders. Surion is operated by Korean Army and Police.
KAI began Surion development in 2006 with assistance from Airbus Helicopters and completed maiden flight in 2010.
