Hungary has grounded its fleet of Saab Gripen fighter fleet following the Wednesday's crash, the second crash involving the type within a month.

Hungary's defense ministry says the experienced pilot Maj. Sandor Kadar was on a training mission in a Gripen JAS-39C jet when the aircraft's forward landing gear had malfunction.

While attempting belly landing at the military air base in the central city of Kecskemet, the pilot ejected when he lost control of the aircraft on the ground.

The aircraft is visibly in repairable condition.

On May 19, a twin seat trainer variant of Hungarian Gripen crashed while landing at an airbase in the Czech Republic during a multi national air exercise.

Hungary operated a 14 fleet Gripen, leased from Sweden before the two crashes.
