U.S. State Department has approved a possible Foreign Military Sale to South Korea for Aegis Combat Systems and associated equipment, parts and logistical support for an estimated cost of $1.91 billion to upgrade its shipboard combat and ballistic missile defense capability.

The Republic of Korea (ROK) has requested a possible sale of 3 Aegis Shipboard Combat Systems, 3 MK-41 Vertical Launching Systems and various other associated equipment.

The Aegis Combat System will equip the three South Korean Navy's 8500 ton KDX-III Se Jong Class destroyers. South Korea will be the fifth nation to operate the system after U.S., Japan, Spain and Norway.

ACS integrates the SPY-1 radar, MK 41 Vertical launching system and SM-3 missile through an advanced battle management system.
