Croatian Air Force has operationalised its fleet of Soviet era MIG-21 fighters following upgrade by Ukrainian Ukrspecexport.

On 16 July 2015 the last and 12th MiG-21 of the Squadron completed the last tests and flight trials, which proved its airworthiness.

The upgrade and overhaul have extended the life span of the fleet, and enable Croatia to field its only operational fighter squadron

In July 2013 the Croatian Ministry of Defence signed a $19.3 million worth contract with Ukrspecexport on acquisition and overhaul of 12 MiG fighter aircraft (seven aircraft of the Croatian Air Force and five aircraft acquired from Ukraine).

The contract stipulated a 24-month guarantee following the delivery of the aircraft successfully tested and handed over to the Croatian Air Force.

The delivery has been long delayed following the tensions arised due to Crimean annexation by Russia.

Croatia is planing to replace the vintage 1960 era designed MIG-21 fleet by a Western aircraft. Possible replacements include Saab Gripen, Dutch Lockheed Martin F-16s and German F-4 Phantoms.
