Russian Navy has deployed the Su-33 deck-based fighter, part of the air regiment of the Northern Fleet to the Kola Polar Region of Russian Arctic, from August 1.
The Su-33, naval variant of the famed Su-27 is on air defence duty, operating from Russia's lone aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov.
The single-seat ship-based STOBAR fighter, with upward folding wings and horizontal tail surfaces (for hangar storage), is equipped with probe-and-drogue flight refuelling capability. It has strengthened undercarriage and structure to sustain the tough naval conditions and larger wings to generate enough lift during carrier operations.
The Su-33 is designed for defense of naval ships from aerial threats. It has a 6500 kg payload and a range of 3000 km.
Russian Navy will replace these 20 year old 23 aircraft fleet with the smaller and modern naval Mig-29K fighter.
