Boeing has been selected as the prime contractor for the development of U.S. Air Force’s Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS), that will enhance the air superiority of the F-15 fighter fleet.
This new electronic warfare suite will counter threats and better protect air crews and ensure the F-15 air superiority fighter stay relevant and dominant through 2040 and beyond.
The contract valued at $4 billion, will see the new threat detection system installed on more than 400 F-15Es and F-15Cs, replacing the Tactical Electronic Warfare System also known as TEWS designed in 1980s.
BAE Systems has been selected as a subcontractor by Boeing to develop and manufacture the new, all-digital electronic warfare system.
The EPAWSS incorporates a fully integrated, multi-spectral EW suite that will feature the latest in jamming, targeting, infrared threat detection and enhanced decoy capabilities.
The system will improve aircraft protection with advanced electronic countermeasures, radar warning, and increased chaff and flare capability.
The new system will address future requirements including the capability to detect and defeat threats in contested and highly contested environments and capability gap due to evolved threats. First developmental testing are slated for 2017.
Boeing has also unveiled a weapon package upgrade for the F-15, dubbed the 2040C Eagle upgrade, that will enable the vintage fighter double its air to air weapons payload.
