A Spanish military helicopter has crashed in the Atlantic ocean, about 280 nautical miles from Gando and 40 nautical miles southwest of Dakhla on Thursday.

The Airbus Helicopter AS332 Super Puma was returning after a two week long training with the Senegalese armed forces in Dakar.

The helicopter, manned by a captain, a lieutenant and a sergeant of the Air Force, took off from the Mauritanian town of Nouadibou, refueled from Dakar, at 13:13 Zulu time and was due to arrive at Gando 16:45.

A Moroccan Puma search and rescue helicopter in the area located the crew members in a life raft adjacent to the floating helicopter, after Spanish Defense Minister Pedro Morenés, requested Moroccan support.

The crashed Super Puma was part of the Spanish Air Force’s 802 Squadron based at Gran Canaria airport,

A similar crash happened on September 19, 2014 when another Super Puma helicopter also belonging to 802 Squadron crashed into the sea with the loss of four crew members.
