Egyptian charter airline Cairo Aviation has signed a deal for the purchase of 6 Irkut MC-21 single aisle passenger aircraft, during the Dubai Airshow.

The agreement which also includes an option for four aircraft MS-21, mark the first export order for the new generation Russian airliner, which can seat up to 180 passengers.

Irkut will also establish a maintenance center for the aircraft in the vicinity of the international airport of Al-Alamein (Al Alamain) 184 km from Cairo. The airline's parent company, KATO Investment will transfer free area adjacent to the airport, to accommodate the facilities.

The Cairo based airline currently operates a Russian Tupolev Tu-204 passenger jet.

The short to medium haul airliner, will be the second new generation passenger aircraft designed by Russia, after the Sukhoi Superjet, which can seat upto 100 passengers. The plane designed by Yakovlev and Irkut, will be assembled at the Irkutsk Aircraft Factory of Irkut.

Maiden flight of the MC-21 is targeted for mid 2016, powered by a Pratt & Whitney PW1400G geared turbofan engine. The alternative Russian engine, the PD-14 has begun flight testing recently.
