Piaggio Aerospace rolled out the first MPA (Multirole Patrol Aircraft) based on the P.180 Avanti platform in Genoa, Italy the company announced during the Dubai Airshow.

The multi role aircraft can carry out surveillance missions over land and sea, and is equipped with SAAB’s advanced multi-mission surveillance systems for maritime and overland missions, along with a mission management system, radar and electro-optic sensors.

Onboard electronics include the new SAAB Albatros Mission System, Littoral and overland Ground Moving Target Indicator (GMTI) RDR 1700 G(V)2 search and surveillance radar system, EO/IR sensors and Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion Avionic Suite.

Major improvements over the P.180 Avanti platform include, enhanced airframe, increased maximum take off weight, 50 percent increase in wing span, 35 percent increase of the horizontal tail, 20 percent increase of the forward wing surfaces (canards), new scimitar propeller blades that reduce noise reduction and doubled fuel capacity.

The increased wingspan along with other refinements, allow high altitude cruising and good loitering speed at low and high altitude, ideal for surveillance missions.

At a operational ceiling of 41,000 feet, the MPA can fly a 10 hour mission or 6 hours at low altitude in coastal or offshore waters. It has a 350 KTAS cruise speed with a maximum range of more than 3300 Nm.

It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PT-6A turboprop engines.

Piaggio is also showcasing a MPA Ground Demonstrator at the Dubai Air Show at the stand of Mubadala, shareholder of Piaggio Aerospace. Maiden flight of the aircraft is scheduled for early next year. UAE is expected to be the launch customer.
