The Pratt & Whitney has successfully completed the maiden flight test of its new PW1900G PurePower® Geared Turbofan™ (GTF) engine for the Embraer E190-E2 and E195-E2 aircraft.

The PW1900G engine model, which was assembled at Pratt & Whitney's Middletown Engine Center in Connecticut, flew on Pratt & Whitney's Boeing 747SP flying test bed at the company's Mirabel Flight Test Center, in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada.

The engine will power the maiden flight of Embraer E190-E2 next year, which is now in final assembly in Brazil.

The PurePower engine family has completed more than 23,000 hours of testing and 40,000 cycles.
The E-Jet E2 program is one of two that Pratt & Whitney and Embraer are working together on. Pratt & Whitney is part of the collaboration which supplies the V2500-E5 engine for the Embraer KC-390, which is under certification campaign. Pratt & Whitney also supplies the auxiliary power unit for the E-Jet E2 program.

The P&W pure power engine family powers most of the new generation commercial jets slated to enter service, including the Bombardier CSeries, Mitsubishi MRJ, Airbus A320neo and Irkut MC-21, and is the major contributor to their double digit fuel efficiency improvement.

The engine features a unique planetary gearing system, that decouple the fan and turbine, allowing each to operates at their optimum speed. This reduces the no of parts, engine noise and improve efficiency.
