Russia and Iran has signed a new contract for supply of the advanced S-300PMU2 air defense systems, Rostec general director Sergei Chemezov, said during the Dubai Airshow.

Earlier contract for the S-300 systems was signed in 2007 under a $800 million contract.

The deal was suspended by Vladmir Putin in 2010 following Western pressure and UN sanctions imposed on Iran due to its nuclear program.

He said, according to the deal, Iran will first withdraw the $ 4 billion international arbitration claim against Russia, after the deal was suspended.

He added the new S-300 system will be modified and improved variants.

The S-300 is regarded as most potent air defense system currently fielded. It can engage targets like aircraft flying up to 27 km height at a range of 3-200 km and ballistic targets with a maximum height of 25 at a range from 3-40 km.

The system can simultaneously track and engage up to six targets. A ripple of two missiles are fired at each target, to achieve high kill rate.

When delivered, the system will be a major Iranian deterrence against Israeli and U.S. airstrikes.

The system is succeeded by the more capable S-400 system with Russian armed forces, which is claimed to have anti-stealth capability. China has signed a deal to acquire the system in 2014. India is expected to finalize a deal for the type, during the Indian Prime minister's visit to Russia later this year.
