The HondaJet HA-420 light business jet received type certification from the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Tuesday.

Honda Aircraft Company and the FAA made the announcement today at the Honda Aircraft headquarters in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The FAA presented the type certificate to Honda Aircraft Company President and CEO Michimasa Fujino in front of more than 2,000 people, including FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, government representatives, community leaders, HondaJet dealers, suppliers, and Honda Aircraft associates.

The certification was awarded after rigorous ground and flight tests with the FAA. Total flight hours exceeded 3,000, with testing conducted at more than 70 locations across the United States.

In a typical four seat configuration, the HondaJet can cruise with a speed of 420 knots (483 mph) at 30,000 ft and fly to 1180 nm (NBAA IFR).

HondaJet features Over-The-Wing Engine Mount (OTWEM) configuration, natural-laminar flow wing and composite fuselage. The composite  fuselage is created from a cutting-edge combination of co-cured integral structure and honeycomb sandwich structures.

The unique OTWEM configuration dramatically improves performance and fuel efficiency by reducing aerodynamic drag, cabin sound and minimizes ground-detected noise. It allows for the roomiest cabin in its class, the largest baggage capacity, and a fully serviceable private aft lavatory.

The HondaJet is powered by two highly fuel-efficient GE Honda HF120 turbofan jet engines rated at 2050 lbf each.

It is equipped with a Honda-customized Garmin®G3000 avionics deck. The dual touch-screen controllers and three 14-inch landscape high-resolution displays offer enhanced navigation, flight planning, and control. The advanced glass cockpit enable either single-pilot or dual-pilot operation.

With HondaJet FAA type certification achieved, Honda Aircraft is now ramping up production in Greensboro with 25 aircraft on the final assembly line.

The Honda Aircraft workforce is nearing 1,700 people, as the company prepares for deliveries, pilot training and after-sales customer service and support by the end of the year.

Honda Aircraft Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. Founded in 2006, Honda Aircraft’s world headquarters is located in North Carolina, the birthplace of aviation.
