The first Airbus A320neo destined for launch customer Qatar Airways has completed maiden flight today, from Airbus Hamburg final assembly line in Germany.

The latest evolution of the Airbus' 28 year old A320 single aisle passenger aircraft platform, A320neo features new generation engine and other aerodynamic enhancements.

The maiden delivery of the aircraft registered D-AXAN, is scheduled for later this month, and is first of 50 of the type ordered in 2011.

The A320neo offers a 20 percent fuel burn improvement per seat compared to current jetliners and comes standard with fuel saving Sharklet wingtip devices. It has two new engine option (neo) choices: Pratt & Whitney’s Pure Power PW1100G-JM, along with the CFM International LEAP-1A.

The A320neo powered by the PW1100G-JM engines received joint Type Certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on 24th November 2015.

The certification of the LEAP-1A-powered A320neo will be achieved in the coming months, and then subsequently the A321neo and A319neo versions for each engine type.

In addition, operators will benefit from 500 miles of additional range -bringing maximum range to 4000 nautical miles, 5 percent lower maintenance costs, as well as reduced noise and emissions, all while being able to accommodate up to 20 extra passengers without compromising comfort.
