Finmeccanica announced that it has signed a MoU with Era Group Inc. for the development of the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) variant of the AgustaWestland AW609 commercial TiltRotor aircraft at the Heli-Expo 2016 in (Louisville, Kentucky).
Combining the best of both into a aircraft, the AW609 takes off and land like a helicopter with its two rotors in vertical position, and cruise like a fixed-wing aircraft by rotating the rotor 90 degree into horizontal position.
First flown in 2003, the second prototype suffered a fatal crash in October 2015 during flight testing, killing both test pilots on board.
Since then flight testing has been suspended pending the accident investigation lead by Italy's ANSV agency.
Almost 60 orders have already been logged for the AW609 globally to perform several missions including search and rescue, offshore transport, executive/private transport and homeland security.
