UK has signed an agreement with U.S. government to acquire 50 Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, UK Ministry of Defense announced.

The $2.3 billion deal are being purchased via a Foreign Military Sale with the United States Government.

The deal includes an initial support contract for maintenance of the new helicopters, along with spare parts and training simulators for UK pilots.

The new helicopter’s improved computing capacity and updated sensors means the new fleet will also be receptive to upgrades in the future, ensuring it remains at the cutting-edge of technology.

The first UK helicopters are due off the US production line in early 2020 and will begin entering service with the British Army in 2022.

To date, Boeing has delivered 149 AH-64Es to the U.S Army, logging more than 60,000 flight hours and 17,000 combat flying hours.

Leonardo Helicopters (formerly AgustaWestland) will continue to lead the arrangements to support our existing Apache helicopters until they are retired from service in 2023/24.

The Apache is armed with a 30 mm (1.18 in) M230 chain gun carried between the main landing gear, under the aircraft's forward fuselage. It has four hardpoints mounted on stub-wing pylons, typically carrying a mixture of AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and Hydra 70 rocket pods
