Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) has commenced low speed wind tunnel trials for designing fuselage for the indigenous KF-X stealth fighter program.

Phase 1 and 2 of the program will design an optimum stealthy fuselage by mid 2018. The Phase 3 will carry out detailed data acquisition from the finalized design by 2020.

The current fuselage shape, called C105 is being trialed at 70 m/s speed by Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).

Approximately 13,000 hours of test will be carried out which will also include high speed wind tunnel, forced vibration, inlet wind tunnel tests.

KF-X is a twin engined single seat fighter being designed for Korean and Indonesian Air Force, featuring domestically produced AESA radar, better electronic warfare system, IRST, supercruise and basic stealth capabilities.

KAI plans to complete the KF-X program by 2026, with preliminary design review expected by 2018 and Critical Design Review by 2019.

The first KF-X prototype will be rolled out by 2021 and maiden flight the following year.

General Electric was recently selected to supply its F414 after burning turbofan engine for the program.

In 2015, U.S. refused to supply key technologies for the program, including the AESA radar, IRST system and next generation jammers.
