Wreckage of the Ilyushin IL-76 fire fighting aircraft operated by Russian Emergency Ministry has been located in the Irkutsk region.

The aircraft went missing on Friday, during fire fighting mission over the fore region.

Rescuers found the debris of the plane at approximately in 02:00 AM (Moscow time) in Kachug District, 9 km to the southeast from the settlement of Rybny Uyan on a hill.

The crashed plane was found by the rescuers from the Tsentrospas Team and employees of the Aerial Forest Protection Service in the area, which was earlier determined as possible crash site.

The aircraft was completely destroyed in the crash, with only its emphennage recognisable. Bodies of the ten crew members onboard were retrieved along with the flight data recorder.

Preliminary conclusion is that the aircraft could have caught fire while performing water bombing over a hot spot from an altitude of 300 m or the engines could have stalled following ingestion of forest fire smoke.

The Ilyushin Il-76 plane is the largest firefighting plane in the world. It is capable of dumping 42 tons of water in one run.
