The launch of a presumed KN-11 submarine-launched ballistic missile occurred off the coast of Sinpo, where a submarine base is located according to satellite imagery. The missile was launched from a submerged underwater pontoon.

U.S. strategic Command detected and tracked the missile, that travelled more than 300 miles toward Japan, before crashing into Sea of Japan.

An earlier test firing of the type in July reportedly failed according to South Korean Military.

Unlike land based ballistic missiles, submarine launched ballistic missile are harder to detect, hence posing increased threat as preemptive strikes are almost impossible.

In July, South Korea has selected site to base a U.S. THAAD anti ballistic missile systems against North Korean threat amid protest from China and Russia. The Lockheed Martin built system is capable of destroying short to medium range ballistic missiles in endo-atmosphere.
