Russia began operating bomber planes from Iranian territory to strike ISIS targets in Syria on Tuesday.
On August 15, Russia deployed its Tu-22M3 long range strategic bombers and Su-34 fighter bombers to the Hamadan airbase located in North West Iran.
Even though the bombers have to cross Iraqi airspace, the new base closer to Syria enable Russian bombers to almost double the weapon payload and strike targets faster.
Earlier the Tu-22M3 bombers flew from Russian territory to carry out strikes in Syria, degrading the weapon payload capacity. The new basing reduces flight distance by 1000 miles.
On August 16, 2016, Tu-22M3 and Su-34 bombers from the Hamedan airbase carried out a concentrated airstrike on objects of the ISIS and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist groupings in the provinces of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor and Idlib.
As a result, the strikes have eliminated 5 large ammunition depots with armament, munitions and fuel, training camps of militants near Serakab, Al-Ghab, Aleppo and Deir ez-Zor cities, 3 control centres of militants near the cities Jafra and Deir ez-Zor as well as a significant number of militants.
Ammunition depots, training camps and control centres destroyed by the bombing had been used for support of militant groupings near Aleppo.
On August 17, 2016, Su-34 struck ISIS targets with fragmentation bomb charge and made an airstrike on ISIS terrorist facilities in the Deir ez-Zor province.
Su-30SM and Su-35S fighters from Russia's Hmeymim airbase in Syria, covered the long-range bombers.
