A Russian Navy Mig-29KUB naval fighter has crashed while operating from the Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday.

The Mig-29KUB was one of the four of the type onboard the Russian aircraft carrier deployed to the Syrian coast to carry out ground attacks in support of the Syrian Government.

The type was on its maiden combat deployment and the aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from the carrier on a training sortie, according to Russian Ministry of Defense.

The pilots onboard the twin seater ejected safely and was rescued by Russian Navy helicopter on board the carrier.

The crash came days after the type was first spotted over Syrian skies on 12 November.

Following the crash, Sukhoi Su-33, also embarked on the carrrier was deployed to strike targets in Syria, today.

The incident was confirmed by U.S. intelligence agencies according to Fox news.

The Mig-29KUB is a trainer variant of the navalised Mig-29K developed for Indian Navy requirement following the acquisition of the Russian Gorshkov/INS Vikramaditya aircraft carrier.

The type achieved maiden flight in 2007, and was first delivered to Indian Navy in 2009.

This is the second crash involving the type. In 2011 a Mig-29 KUB aircraft was involved in a fatal crash during flight testing prior to delivery to India.
