The two Western rival aircraft manufacturers, Boeing and Airbus marked a drop in net orders in 2016, while Airbus retained its order lead against Boeing, held since 2012.

Airbus deliveries increased 8 per cent, delivering 688 aircraft compared to 635 in 2015, while Boeing delivered 748 aircraft compared to 762 in 2015.

Airbus delivery included 545 single aisle A320 Family of which 68 were A320neo, 66 A330s, 49   A350 XWBs and 28 A380s. Over 40 percent of single aisle deliveries were the larger A321 models

Boeing delivered 490 single aisle 737 family aircraft, 13 B767, 99 B777, 137 B787 and 9 B747 (including three deliveries under operating lease).

Airbus achieved 731 net orders from 51 customers of which eight are new customers. These included 607 singles aisle and 124 wide-body aircraft.

Airbus racked almost half of its orders in December 2016. A total of 320 firm orders were bagged, in which 72 aircraft order was finalized with Indian low cost airliner GoAir and 100 with Iran Air.


Boeing booked 668 net orders, valued at $94.1 billion at list prices, including 550 B737 family, 26 B767s, 17 B777s, 58 B787s and 17 B747s.

At the end of 2016, Airbus’ overall backlog stood at 6,874 aircraft valued at US$1,018 billion at list prices, while Boeing's backlog stood at 5,715 aircraft.
Boeing's key milestones for the year included the first flight of the 737 MAX, the opening of the 777X Composite Wing Center in Everett, Wash., and start of 787-10 final assembly in North Charleston, S.C.

Airbus milestones in 2016 included the delivery of Airbus 10,000th aircraft – an A350 XWB and the successful first flight of the A350-1000. Airbus also commenced deliveries of both engine variants of the A320neo and the first US-assembled aircraft, an A321, was delivered from Mobile, Alabama.

Aircraft order cancellations almost doubled in 2016, to 398 aircraft compared to 220 in 2015. Airbus suffered the most with 218 order cancellations.
