Iran Air has taken delivery of its first new passenger aircraft, an Airbus A321, in a handover ceremony held today in Toulouse, France.

The delivery is the first from a firm order placed by Iran Air in December 2016 for 100 Airbus aircraft (46 single aisle and 54 wide-body jets) to renew and expand its ageing fleet.

The 100 aircraft include 46 A320 Family, 38 A330 Family and 16 A350 XWB aircraft.

The delivery marks the first modern passenger aircraft to enter service in Iran, after decades of international sanctions.

The single aisle 189 seat aircraft is scheduled to begin commercial service from Saturday.

Iran has also ordered 80 Boeing passenger jets and is negotiating a deal for 20 ATR-72 turboprop regional airliners.
