A Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) Saab Gripen fighter jet crashed while performing aerial maneuvers during an air show at Hat Yai airport in Songkhla province.

The pilot Sqn Ldr Dilokrit Pattavee onboard the single seat JAS-39C did not survive the crash.

Video shows the low flying aircraft in full afterburner thrust suddenly banking left and nose diving inverted in to the ground.

Thailand acquired 12 Gripen C/D multi-role fighter jets to replace its aged Northrop F-5 Tiger jets in 2008.

Delivery stretched from 2011 to 2013. The fleet is based at Wing 7 in Surat Thani.

Powered by a single  Volvo RM12 after-burning turbofan engine, the Gripen is a lightweight and agile fighter jet incorporating advanced, highly adaptable avionics.
