Australia has approved development of a Short Range Ground Based Air Defense system based on the Raytheon-Kongsberg NASAM air defense system for Australian Army.

Raytheon Australia will be the prime system integrator and Norwegian Kongsberg will be the major sub-contractor for the program.

The capability will be operated by the Army’s 16th Air Land Regiment and will be used to protect deployed forces from increasingly sophisticated air threats, both globally and locally.

The system will be developed as part of the land-based Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) Program and will replace the 30 year old Saab RBS 70 surface to air missile system in service with the Army.

Australia will invest $2 billion for the development of the system, and will ensure local participation in the program.

Raytheon Australia will investigate the option of the integrating the MEDUSA AESA radar system developed by Canberra-based CEA Technologies into the upgraded NASAMS.

Also Thales Australia’s ‘Hawkei’ protected mobility vehicle, manufactured in Bendigo, Victoria, will be considered as a potential platform for the system’s missile launchers.

The National Advanced Surface to Air Missile System (NASAMS) employs the Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missile (AIM-120) as the primary weapon.
