A Malaysian Airlines Boeing 737-800 passenger jet skidded off runway, while landing at the Sibu airport in the state of Sarawak in Malaysia.

The Malaysian flag carrier said the incident happened at 10:17 pm local time, during heavy rain.

The aircraft was carrying 61 passengers and 6 crew members, flying flight MH 2718 from the Kuala Lumpur International airport.

All onboard were safely evacuated through the two side rafts deployed.

Pictures show the aircraft resting on its belly with both front and rear landing gears collapsed.

The airline said an immediate investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.

The single aisle Boeing 737-800 seats 162 passengers in a two-class layout, or 189 in one class, and competes with the Airbus A320.
