Franco-Italian turboprop passenger jet manufacturer ATR has delivered the first four ATR 72-600 turboprop passenger jets to Iran Air, Iran's national flag carrier.
The aircraft is first batch of the 20 aircraft ordered by Iran Air earlier this, with an option for 20 more. Deliveries of the 20 firm aircraft will extend until the end of 2018.
Following the relief on international sanctions on Iran, there is a major need to modernize and develop air transportation to boost local economies throughout the country and improve connectivity between the regions.
Iran relies on a strong domestic infrastructure, that numbers 60 airports that the ATRs are fully capable of serving. The ATR 72-600 is ideal for operations in many types of challenging environments, including small airfields, unpaved runways and mountainous regions.
The ATR 72-600 will form the core of the regional aircraft of the Iran Air fleet and will substantially contribute to the expansion and development of the services provided by the national airline across the country.
The ATR 72-600 can seat between 68-78 passengers and is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW 127M turboprop engines rated with a maximum take off power of 2,750 horse power per engine
The aircraft have a maximum weight at take-off of 23,000 kg and can carry a max payload of 7,500 kg.
The maximum range with full passenger load is 900 nautical miles (1,665 km).
Iran Air has also signed deals with Airbus and Boeing for 100 and 80 aircraft respectively, to replace the aged fleet of aircraft operated by the airline.
