Franco-Italian regional turboprop aircraft manufacturer is planning to launch a new version of its ATR 42-600 turboprop passenger aircraft with enhanced Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) capabilities.

Designated ATR 42-600S, the STOL version will require only a 800 m (2625 ft) long runway to take off and land, 200-400 m less than the present take off requirement and 150-250 less than present landing requirement.

The STOL capability will open hundreds of new airports with 800-900 m long runways to ATR-42's operating list, thus increasing business opportunities for operators.

ATR sees a potential for nearly 600 deliveries of 50-seat turboprops in the 20 years to come.

The ATR-42 can seat between 30 and 50 passengers and can fly to a distance of 800 nautical miles (1,483 km) with full load.

Powered by two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127M turboprop engines rated at 2400 shaft horsepower (SHP) each, the ATR-42 have a maximum take off weight of 18,600 kg and can carry a maximum payload of 5,500 kg.
