A Russian Air Force Sukhoi Su-27 Flanker air superiority fighter intercepted U.S. Air Force bombers flying theater bomber assurance and deterrence operations as a part of the Saber Strike and BALTOPS exercises in the U.S. European Theater.

The Flanker intercepted a USAF B-1B Lancer, B-52H Stratofortress bombers and a KC-135 Stratotanker while flying close to Russian airspace over Baltic sea.

Pentagon said the intercept was safe and professional, as the fighter escorted the USAF aircraft until further away from the Russian border.

USAF has deployed its three strategic bombers, including the B-2 stealth bomber to the European theater as a part of the NATO exercises.

Two B-2 Spirit stealth bombers arrived at the RAF Fairford, UK, to join the B-1B Lancers and B-52H Stratofortresses on Friday June 9, to participate in the theater bomber assurance and deterrence operations.

U.S. Strategic Command routinely conducts bomber operations across the globe to reinforcing its commitment to NATO and non-NATO allies.
